Ziele

Gain an overview into the field of Biomedical Engineering. Acquire knowledge of the sensors and signal analysis used to solve specific medical problems. Develop MATLAB / Simulink model of physiological systems. Consider the unique ethical problems that are a consequence of medical engineering.

Inhalt

Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering in the field of medicine, and covers such topics as the electrocardiogram (ECG), instruments used in intensive care and during surgery, as well as Doppler ultrasound and other imaging techniques including Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Students attending this course will gain an introduction into the physiology behind some of these technologies, and will learn how the raw physical data is processed before it is presented to the doctor. MATLAB / Simulink will be used to develop a model of different physiological systems. In the project students will use MATLAB / Simulink to analyse ECG data and diagnose specific abnormalities.

During this course knowledge in the following fields will be covered:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary system (heart + lungs) for engineers
  • Biopotential measurement, including the electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Biomedical sensors, including blood gas measurement
  • Biosignal processing
  • Physiological modelling in MATLAB / Simulink
  • Moral and ehical issues
  • Ultrasound imaging
